Loch Fyne

Older readers may remember Hanrahans, something of a city institution back in the day, so it was. The venue has changed guise a few times since then but has now truly settled into its own skin as Sheffield’s first Loch Fyne seafood restaurant.

Airy, clean and bright, with an open kitchen, cold counter, small bar and welcoming atmosphere. Despite being a chain, they’ve retained something of a homely, independent feel - no doubt from the fact that the Loch Fyne brand first started out as a small oyster farm over 20 years ago in the Scottish lowlands.

 

The Food

We’re here to sample their new Summer menu - though it’s fair to say many are here for the popular moules and frites for a tenner night. Every other table seems to be playing host to huge cauldrens. We’re offered a platter of starters by our friendly waitress Rosie which contains the likes of Loch Fyne Kinglas (fillet of smoked salmon, sashimi style), oysters, scallops, Scottish smoked venison, Scottish herring fillets in four marinades, squid, mackerel pate and Bradan Orach (strongly smoked salmon).

It’s a real treat, not to mention an eyeopener. Particular praise goes to the salmon and pate.

Mains of clam & chilli tagliolini  and steamed Anglesey sea bass fillet with Loch Fyne scallops and braised fennel follow. The former dish being a messy, yet tasty and filling affair which built to a nice tingly burn, while the latter was succulent and full of flavours and textures - wisely topped up with a side order of chunky chips.

 

The Verdict

If you specialise in anything, nothing less than perfection will do. When it comes to fish, Loch Fyne is a real catch. A pearl in Sheffield’s oyster, so to speak.
