Italian Express
Recently opened on South Road in Walkley, Italian Express bills itself as the very first ‘original’ Italian takeaway.
What that means is while pizzas are on the menu, they’re complemented by a wide range of traditional Italian fayre - including a huge array of pasta and sauces, risottos, lasagne and cannelloni as well as an almighty selection of chicken, steak and fish options.
It’s basically got the menu of a high class Italian restaurant - only you can have it delivered to your front door.
The Food
You are well and truly spoilt for choice at Italian Express. There are 25 (yes, count ‘em) appetisers - from antipasto Italiano to Scottish Mussels cooked with chilli, white wine and tomato sauce.
We tried a range of mains; the swordfish marinara cooked in white wine, tomato sat on a bed of seafood was a classic Italian dish, and certainly restaurant standard.
Then a real surprise - and a dish I’d never come across before - pork shank oven baked with cherry tomatoes, red wine, onions and rosemary. We also tried an Italian classic; Penne Polpette, which was just as sumptuous as the rest of the menu.
The Verdict
If I had a pound for every time a new business had opened in Sheffield claiming to be ‘unlike anything we’ve seen before’ I’d have retired a few years ago.
So, while the concept of takeaway Italian food in itself isn’t unique (Portofino have been doing it for years), a dedicated takeaway service that’s not part of a restaurant is, and that’s what sets Italian Express apart.
The food is great, the service is quick and arrives at your door piping hot and in perfect condition - which is why this place delivers in every sense.

Starter Calamari Inferno. Fresh squid cooked in garlic with tomato and chilli sauce. Pasta Penne Matriciana. Bacon, chilli in a tomato sauce. Carne Bistecca alla Cacciatora. Sirloin steak cooked in mushroom, peppers, onions, tomato, cream and brandy.
