Hong Kong Wok

Given the plethora of eateries staggered along London Road, it’s no mean feat to A) make a big first impression and B) keep folks continually singling your praises.

So, it’s a testament to owner Alice Chan and her team that they’ve managed to do just that since the slick Chinese restaurant launched back in September.

Despite this being Alice’s first restaurant, her business background has seen HK Wok flourish in a very short space of time – ticking every box from the warm, modern décor, through to customer service and (of course) cracking food.

The Food

Complimentary prawn crackers with plum sauce arrive as we peruse the extensive menu – ultimately opting to share the crispy aromatic lamb for starters. It’s a kooky little take on pancakes, instead using lettuce leaves to combine the tender lamb with Hoisin sauce. Great presentation and surprisingly refreshing.

Mains of Seafoods in XO Sauce (served with your choice of noodles) and their fast becoming legendary Three Roasties dish follow. It’s a good job we only shared a starter as the portions are beyond generous.

Huge prawns, squid, mussels and stunning scallops combine for the first dish and you can really taste the freshness. As for the latter, it was quickly apparent why their Three Roasties had gotten people talking – roast duck, honey roast pork and crispy pork, cooked to perfection to deliver a plate that tasted as good as it looked.

Complimentary dessert is offered to finish. But even given the fact it was free, we still couldn’t find room for it.

The Verdict

HK Wok is a real meeting of worlds – offering traditional Chinese dishes in a contemporary environment.

Alice has found herself a treasure in head chef Sifu Hung (who’s plied his trade all over the word for over 30 years) and his experience, along with Alice’s drive and business nouse, is a formidable combination destined for success.
