Devonshire Cat

Based a stone's throw from Devonshire Green, and a hop, skip and a jump from Corporation nightclub, The Devonshire Cat is a drinker's wet dream. 100 bottled beers from around the world, and 12 real ales at any one time, they really know their stuff.

It’s a big place with a comfy modern feel but given they’re so renowned for drinks, it’s easy to overlook the food. So, in one word, don’t.

The Food

The menu itself is pretty impressive as far as pub food goes. The likes of belly pork and wild mushroom risotto rub shoulders with classics such as fish and chips and steak and ale pie. The burgers here are beauties too.

However, it’s when you get to their ever changing specials board behind the bar that they really come to the fore. On this occasion we plump for the smoked haddock fishcake with chips, salad and home-made tartare sauce (£5.75), and the pan fried roasted duck with potato rosti, green beans and cherry sauce (£11). The former offers cracking value for money.

A good plate full with a super-deep fishcake... and the tartare sauce really takes it to another level. The duck, meanwhile, was tender and well presented - and the fusion of all the elements together was a total triumph. It was all washed down with a couple of pints of their excellent house bitter.

The Verdict

It’s easy to see why the Devonshire Cat is always a busy little number. They tick all the right boxes and, in the case of the food, they’re far and beyond your standard pub fare. A belter of a bar. Get involved.
