Bar & Grill
Stuck for a special place to take your loved one this Valentine’s Day, or just looking for a fresh restaurant to try out with friends? Look no further.
This sophisticated new bar/restaurant, complete with an in-house pianist at the weekends, has already developed a reputation for its sumptuous Great British food and great range of drinks.
Many tried and failed, but Bar & Grill is off to a great start – its prime location overlooking award-winning Leopold Square and its uniqueness make it an instant winner.
Owner Richard Downey, a former gig organiser whose other venture is an American themed bar in Huddersfield, noticed a gap in the market when he looked for a Sheffield venue for his next big project.
Leopold Square is an ideal spot for people going to shows at City Hall or the many theatres in town, but with three Italian restaurants, a noodle bar and a tapas bar, Richard thought it lacked a high-class Great British restaurant and made it his mission to implement one there.
After two years of arduous negotiations, it’s a beautiful space created with a high-end clientele in mind. The décor, designed by Richard himself, is warm and welcoming with tables and panelling in solid oak; low-hung intimate lighting; a grand piano sits in the middle of the room and floor-to-ceiling windows offer an attractive view of the buzzing square below.
That being said, fret not if ‘classy’ isn’t your middle name. This place remains a bar & grill with a brasserie feel, and with its many offers and specialised menus for different times of the day you won’t have to break the bank.
Licensed until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, their popular island bar offers a good range of beers including Budweiser Draught, unique to this venue, and Stella Artois Black. Cocktails are a speciality but there’s also a good wine list, with a dozen available by the glass and nearly 50 bottles from £14.95 including the house red, a fruity Tempranillo.
Head Chef Chris Lawrie, a Hillsborough lad, is in charge of the ambitious menu. He started his training at Castle College and came second in a national competition for best chef in training, before undertaking a three-year apprenticeship at The Ritz in London, and going on to the Imperial Hotel in Blackpool and Piccolino’s in Sheffield.
Renowned for its seven different types of steaks, the biggest and most popular being the 20oz T-Bone, the guys at Bar & Grill are launching a new menu this month, extending the already popular grill section.
They only serve quality local produce, including beef from farms around Yorkshire and Derbyshire, and each steak is fully matured for 28 days before preparation. Fish is also a feature of the menu, along with sandwiches, starters, risotto and traditional dishes – such as fish & chips, sausages & mash, Yorkshire venison and 12oz fillet at £25.95.
Starters begin at £4.95, and many mains are around the £13 mark. An exclusive Valentine’s Day menu has been drawn up for the special evening, including a four-course dinner at £23.95 per person – it includes a starter, a delicious main, a plate of mouth-watering desserts, and tea or coffee.
