Ashoka

ashoka image review

We’re no strangers to Ashoka - and it’s likely most in the city will have enjoyed an evening at the seminal Ecclesall Indian restaurant at some point given the fact they’ve been dishing up quality cuisine since 1967.

Despite its fine reputation in the city, Ashoka never rests on its laurels, and it’s this reason why owner Rahul and co are at the top of their game.

The Food

I start with a firm favourite, the Tandoori Lamb Chops, which are marinated in ginger, garlic, crushed peppers and Bengal mustard then barbecued in a charcoal wood burning oven and served with mixed pulses.

The addition of the Bengal mustard took this to another level. My partner plumped for the Bhel Puri - a featherlight shell of Indian bread filled with small cubes of spiced potato and yellow chick peas.

For our mains we go for the Kashmiri Chicken Bhuna (pieces of chicken breast, stir-fried with rich spices, served in a Karai (wok) and garnished with caramelised onions) and the Sag Paneer (a traditional Punjabi dish made using fresh spinach leaves, select spices and Indian cheese).

Rahul also treated us to a couple of samples of the Sag Chicken (spinach leaves and chicken in a mild sauce) and the Brinjal - delicious fresh baby vine aubergine. These were accompanied by Peshwari (sultana) and Kashmiri (cashew) Nan breads and Special Dhuradoni basmati rice.

The Verdict

To consistently deliver quality of this level for over 40 years says more than I ever could. A treat. As always.
