It’s a few days before Sheffield United take on Burnley in the play-off final and we find ourselves ensconced at Bramall Lane. Though tough tackling and last minute winners are not on the menu tonight.
Instead, we’re here to sample a taster menu from the restaurant at the on site hotel; courtesy of new chef, the Michelin starred Daniel James. Surroundings are stylish and the wine is flowing. A good start.
The Food
Six courses for us tonight, so it’s a good chance to get a flavour of Daniel’s talents. We kick off with rillette of guinea fowl followed by a salmon rillette and soused cucumber with chicken consomme.
No. I didn’t know what a rillette was either. As it turns out though, it’s a kind of pate - and nice little appetiser thank you very much. We then get stuck into the main; a combination of rack of lamb wth dauphinoise potatoes alongside breast of duck.
The plate was stylishly presented, despite them essentially combining two dishes while the lamb succulent and bursting with flavour.
We moved onto a palette cleansing pear sorbet, before the evening’s highlight; a simply delectable iced banana parfait with chocolate panacotta. Absolutely world class.
The Verdict
It will no doubt be a challenge establishing {18Fifty5} as a stand alone restaurant; chiefly because its so obviously part of a hotel. But with food like this, excellent service and genuinely high class decor, the guys at Copthorne are doing everything they can. Excellent.

Starter: Glazed goats cheese, a la grecque vegetables & sun blush tomatoes
Main: Pan fried fillet of brill, nicoise vegetables, basil mash, tomato liquor.
Dessert: Warm gooseberry crumble, vanilla bean ice cream, mulled wine syrup.
