The Mediterranean, Sharrowvale Road
For over three decades now, The Mediterranean has been serving up the best of Spanish tapas, fresh fish and seafood to the people of Sheffield.
Situated in in the heart of Sharrowvale Road, in close proximity to the busy bars and pubs which bustle each weekend, it’s a restaurant that my partner and I have walked by numerous times and commented on how we’d like to pay a visit – but never quite got round to it.
And never before had the restaurant looked so inviting as we fought through the bitter January cold. Once inside, we were graciously met with both a warm room and a warm welcome from the staff who showed us to our table. The atmosphere was relaxed and casual. The décor was anything but flash, instead traditional and comfortable.
First things first: the vino. We opted for the French Merlot Le Versant – a classic full bodied, fruity wine which was just the ticket for a relaxing evening out. To start, I could look no further than the king prawns pan fried in garlic butter and lemon juice, while my partner – a seafood fanatic – opted for the monkfish skewers.
My starter arrived looking sensational, bathed in a parsley and white wine sauce which stole the show. The monkfish skewers were tender, enjoyable and declared delectable by my partner. Our waiter had established a friendly rapport with us from the off and applauded the lack of mess I made from the prawns. A proud moment.
Onto the mains – Beef Fillet Tournedos-Rossini with Peppercorn Sauce and Roasted Salmon. The beef was tender, the sauce creamy and the taste delightfully rich. My partner praised the salmon, which was served on a bed of spinach with a tasty beurre blanc pesto sauce. Our ever-attentive, but never intrusive waiter, topped up our glasses as we chatted and ate.
We couldn’t resist indulging in dessert after seeing the menu featured our personal favourites: chocolate parfait and lemon tart. The parfait was a real winner, both light and tasty. With both dishes devoured, there was nothing left but to bid a fond farewell and head back out into the cold night… but we still managed to retain a warm spot for the wonderful staff at The Mediterranean.
Our expectations for the evening were more than met – with fresh, tasty food, attentive service and relaxed atmosphere. The Mediterranean shows that with age comes experience. And, when it comes to casual dining and simple, high quality dishes – they still live up to their good name.
