Food Review: Las Iguanas

It’s a cold, wet, dark December evening – but, walking through the doors of Las Iguanas, we’re instantly transported to sunnier climes.
Holding court in West One, the vibrant Latin American restaurant offers a welcoming party atmosphere where you can forget about the wintery world outside for a while and enjoy a whole host of authentic dishes – from Mexico to Brazil and beyond.
Warmly greeted and seated, a bottle of Las Iguanas’ Spanish Garnacha aids our selection process. To start, it had to be the classic Albondigas for me. Usually a good barometer for judging Latin American restaurants, these were a mouth-watering mix of lamb fused with apple, mint, parmesan and a seasonal pinch of nutmeg – all beautifully braised in a rich tomato, mint and mild red chilli sauce, topped with Parmesan. Based on an authentic Patagonian recipe, they were simply to die for. For my partner, it was all about the Pato Taquito – rich shreds of roast duck and caramelised onion rolled in a flour tortilla and chargrilled, with a spicy cranberry salsa. A fantastic fusion of flavours that was swiftly devoured.
Onto the mains – Chimichanga and ‘The Full Enchilda’. The former, a deep fried delight, packed with Mexican smoked chipotle chicken, onion and cheese, complemented by home-made tomato salsa, soured cream, spring onion and garlic – surrounded by delicious rice and refried beans – the latter, a titanic tortilla filled with spicy chicken, pepper, onion and cheese, sunk in refried beans and drowned in a smoky chilli sauce. Both rustic, hearty numbers, that really hit the spot – offering the perfect balance of flavour and heat.
To finish, the intriguing Capirotada – a sinful cinnamon, date, bread and brioche pudding smothered in arequipe sauce and date syrup – that was deceptively light and a true treat. Highly recommended.
I’m a big advocate that food should be filling, thrilling and fun – and Las Iguanas ticks all the boxes.
Not afraid to put their own unique twist on the classics, a meal here is akin to eating out on holiday… so, book your trip today, yeah?
